Who cleans the storm drains and drainage ditches?

The Public Works Department is responsible for installing and maintaining storm drains and drainage ditches in public areas and along the streets in the city of Gardena. Storm drains and ditches divert water and debris after a storm or shower away from road surfaces, public access areas, or low basins where water collection could be unhealthy and dangerous. Water instead flows into drains and ditches where it can be safely channeled into streams, lakes, or the ground.

Public Works routinely cleans the drains and ditches to remove any obstacles obstructing the flow of water and makes structural improvements to insure that the system is efficiently and reasonably handling water flow. Citizens are reminded to never dispose of leaves, grass clippings, or trash into the drainage system or in a location, such as a roadway, where debris could be swept into the system by storm water. Such actions may result in serious flooding after the next storm.

To report a storm drain or ditch that is backed up or flooding, contact the Public Works Department at (310) 217-9568 or (310) 217-9599, Monday through Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays.
